Absorption

Writer's picture: SophieSophie

The earth has an amazing yet finite capacity to absorb and dampen the shockwaves of human activity. Soils and wetlands, teeming with legions of microscopic life, can absorb, denature, and filter toxic water and chemical sludge. Trees and plants absorb the carbon dioxide that we barrage the atmosphere with. The earth is resilient, within limits. It is no different with us and our minds. We constantly absorb signals and signs, both good and bad--soaking it all up like sponges.

I wring myself out when I walk in the cool mornings and sacred summer evenings. This filtration process helps me stay in touch with who I really am. It's simple, really: I am a vessel. When we have absorbed so much from the frenzy of our lives, what signals and signs will we keep? Which ones will we project and illuminate? What will we do to ease the burden of the earth who absorbs so much for us?
